Protecting the Children

Westlake Village Family Lawyer Stresses the Importance of Protecting the Children in a Divorce

Divorce can place enormous emotional strains on everyone involved. However, no one runs the risk of being hurt more than the children of the estranged couple. Courts aren't going to tend to their emotional needs but will merely respond if the children are in immediate physical danger. Ultimately, the family, and in particular the parents, need to make sure that the children do not become collateral damage. From the outset, it is important that both parents rise above the petty and hurtful behaviors often found among divorcing couples for the sake of their children. The kids should be protected as much as possible. After all, they are not the ones divorcing. The following behaviors need to be avoided for the sake of the children:
  • Fighting, even if done in private, should not occur around the children. They are very impressionable. Due to their immaturity, they tend to see themselves as the cause of any conflict.
  • Do not force a child to take sides. A common tactic among parents is to try to make a child a confidant, perhaps even a spy. The child is already quite conflicted, generally. Coercing him into a situation which complicates his feelings even more can be very damaging. It is hard enough for the adult parents to deal with the situation. Children simply aren't emotionally mature enough to handle being placed in the middle.
  • Parents need to avoid making the children their "pals." This will undermine their role of authority figure and confuse the children.
  • Never use children as pawns. Doing so will reduce the parent in their eyes. It will likely also cause them to feel diminished as people.
The highest priority in a divorce should be the welfare of the children. To place them below anything else is to compromise their well-being. If you are divorcing, you need an attorney who will best represent your interests, as well as your children's. Call Westlake Village family lawyer Lisa Zonder today to schedule a free consultation.
